Day in the life of a Huf student

When your typical college student starts to think about HUF, he often might think of traveling all over Europe, eating some of the world¹s best cuisine, and seeing masterpieces of art by some of the most renowned Renaissance men. At least, these are the images that came to my mind when I first knew that I was going to Florence.

I had only been envisioning three months of doing anything I wanted, and even though I knew in the back of my mind we would have to somehow take classes, reality did not hit me until a month before I departed from the U.S.A. However, my attitude about going to class and staying around the villa changed once I came here. I believe everyone who comes here learns to appreciate the ³typical days² at the villa. Yes, those typical days include classes, but these classes differ significantly than your average college course. The material these courses offer are not just heard in a lecture, they are also seen, felt, and even sometimes tasted! The average day begins with a small breakfast‹if you get up in time! Classes and chapel usually begins around 9:00 A.M. and conclude at 1:00 P.M. Afterwards, we have a large, Italian dinner, which is a very delicious meals thanks to HUF¹s cook Signora Anna. Following dinner, some students do homework or take a nap, but many take advantage of the opportunity to go into Florence and surrounding communities, either on bus or on a bike they have rented. Some return for supper while others take a sack supper into the communities in order to return at curfew.

A new adventure arises each time one exits the villa¹s walls and immerges himself into a completely new, foreign culture. These experiences make for some good stories to tell each other the next morning. As one gets ready to go to HUF, he should remember to not treat the ³typical days² with disappointment. He should rather cherish them, for in these typical days lie the potential to better understand himself c and develop strong relationships with others‹from Italy or Harding.
